SANT AMBROEUS

The most sophisticated and cosmopolitan of Italian establishments has finally opened in Paris, right in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Founded in Milan in 1936, this café, so typical of Milanese life, is open from morning till night, catering to both light and heavy appetites. Having become a cult favorite on Madison Avenue, in Soho, and in the West Village, as well as in Palm Beach and Aspen, it retains the blend of gastronomy, lifestyle, and aesthetics that has made it so successful.

A place that lives according to the desires of its clientele, which is at once arty, elegant, and discreet. Espresso, cappuccino, lattes, and cornettos in the early morning in the café adjoining the restaurant. Panini and antipasti are available at any time, and people also come to relax in the afternoon while enjoying the famous Princess Cake, the pink cake that has become the signature of Sant Ambroeus.

We also like to drink a perfectly shaken cocktail at the bar before lunch or dinner and enjoying the authentic Milanese cuisine of Chef Oliviero Umberto Amedeo Borgna: vitello tonnato, cotoletta alla Milanese, risotto and osso buco, but also essential recipes of Italian cuisine, the unmissable Avocado Toast and some dishes created especially for this new Parisian address, accompanied by the best transalpine wines.

For the decoration, Fabrizio Casiraghi, who already decorated the Sant Ambroeus in Milan in 2022, chose to blend Milanese heritage and Parisian spirit: sculpted woodwork, mosaics, Italian marble, soft olive green velvet for the sofas; the atmosphere is chic and warm everywhere, wonderfully mixing Parisian chic, Milanese elegance and New York cosmopolitanism.

ANTOINETTE POISSON

Vincent Farelly and Jean-Baptiste Martin, the two founders and artistic directors of A Paris chez Antoinette Poisson (named in homage to the Marquise de Pompadour, born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, a great admirer of art and wallpaper in the 18th century), are both heritage restorers specializing in wallpaper. In 2012, they decided to revive the art of domino paper.

Printed by hand from blocks engraved with floral or geometric patterns, domino papers were hand-colored. Considered the ancestor of wallpaper, they were used to decorate the walls of small rooms such as corridors or alcoves, to cover books, to adorn the interiors of chests or wardrobes, to line boxes and caskets, and were also used to bind paperback books, constituting today a rare testament to a once large-scale production. These decorative papers reached their peak in the 18th century before gradually disappearing in the following century with the advent of block-printed roll paper.

Antoinette Poisson is reviving this forgotten craft, remaining faithful to the techniques and aesthetics of the era by creating designs inspired by the Age of Enlightenment or reissuing historical motifs. Her collection of domino papers is designed, printed sheet by sheet, and colored in her Parisian workshop. Wallpaper by the meter printed in Brittany, linen or cotton fabric woven and printed in France, handmade wedding boxes and lampshades, and all those notebooks we carry everywhere with us—all these little treasures have found their place in a charming boutique in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

SAINT LAURENT BABYLONE

Saint-Laurent Babylone has taken up residence at the historic Saint-Laurent Rive-Gauche address, the very place where Loulou de la Falaise often dressed in a flash in the morning for work, after dancing until dawn with Saint-Laurent’s entourage. In this space, Anthony Vaccarello, the designer for the House of Saint Laurent, sought to create a hybrid venue that promotes the many facets of cultural life and artistic expression, while remaining true to his vision. For fashion is not the designer’s only playground; he also supports the art of cinema with Saint Laurent Productions, contributing to films by Gaspar Noé, Pedro Almodóvar, Jacques Audiard, and David Cronenberg, as well as photography with Editions Saint Laurent Rive Droite, which publishes numerous art books.

A space with raw, minimalist architecture that, in addition to art books, vintage editions, magazines, and vinyl records, offers photo exhibitions, author readings, book signings, and DJ sessions.

Legend has it that James Joyce wrote part of “Ulysses” in the building of the sublime Pavillon Faubourg Saint-Germain. Its bar, open to the street, is resolutely aimed at a loyal clientele of the neighborhood. But the cocktail menu created by mixologist Clément Lepage pays tribute to travelers and all the destinations that make us dream, comfortably installed in this little cocoon of velvet and gold.

Fourth address of Cyril Lignac rue du Dragon and it is not to displease us : Dragon could be a mix of the other three. Same cozy and intimate atmosphere as at the Dragon, his cocktail bar that we love so much, the decor is once again signed by the Studio KO duo.

A menu with Asian accents like at the Bar des Prés, with Gyozas, tataki, tartare, dumplings or bao burger, in an absolutely succulent gastronomic version and always the chic but friendly spirit that seduced us from the opening of Aux Prés.

Yves Gastou is a specialist for furniture and sculpture of the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s. He hunts for, rediscovers all the forgotten designers of those years. He was the one who since 1985 has organized the first exhibitions in France of Ron Arad, Ettore Sottsass or Shiro Kuramata, that he then confronted with the works by older major designers of the 1940s and 1950s as André Arbus, Jacques Adnet, Paul Evans, Gabriella Crespi, Joe Colombo and many others. It is thanks to gallery owners like him that we now enjoy the return of Art Deco in the forefront. Joined by his son Victor in 2005, Yves Gastou continues to exhibit the spatial and playful furniture of the 60s and 70s, cherishing the dream of a free and relaxed way of life, of an art democratized thanks to the introduction of new materials, such as resin, brass, stainless steel, and stone geodes, while integrating a sleek contemporary design. Victor has continued the adventure alone since Yves’ disappearance in 2020.

It all began in 1992 when Ece Ege created a collection of white cotton poplin shirts, offering them in several styles. The following year, she founded the brand Dice Kayek with her sister Ayse, continuing to focus on the shirt. That same year, she showed her collection in Paris during Fashion Week and joined the ranks of the major fashion houses. Since then, the two sisters, whose brand is celebrated worldwide, have continued to create collections that subtly blend East and West, notably incorporating ancestral techniques to which they are deeply attached.
