Galerie CAHIERS D’ART

Fondé en 1926 par Christian Zervos au 14 rue du Dragon, en plein cœur de Paris, « Cahiers d’Art » désigne à la fois une revue, une maison d’édition et une galerie. Les débuts de Cahiers d’Art coïncident avec l’avènement du Bauhaus, la découverte de Le Corbusier, de Klee, de Kandinsky, et avec les recherches de Zervos sur les arts primitifs et l’archéologie des Cyclades. Des années 30 jusqu’au déclenchement de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la revue s’est surtout intéressée à l’œuvre de Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Léger, Ernst, Arp et Giacometti. En 1932 le premier volume du Catalogue Picasso paraît ; un projet qui deviendra le travail de toute une vie, une collaboration entre Zervos et Picasso se matérialisant en 33 volumes devenus depuis l’ouvrage de référence sur l’œuvre de Picasso. Les collaborations des artistes avec Cahiers d’Art ont souvent donné lieu à des œuvres originales.

Christian et Yvonne Zervos organisèrent à la Galerie Cahiers d’Art entre deux à cinq expositions par an de 1932 à 1970, notamment celles consacrées à Calder, Gonzalez, Tanguy, Laurens, Brauner et Picasso.

Depuis son relancement en 2012 par le suédois Staffan Ahrenberg, Cahiers d’Art a réédité les 33 volumes du catalogue Picasso par Christian Zervos, en collaboration avec l’Administration Picasso, disponible en français et en anglais pour la première fois de son histoire. En parallèle, Cahiers d’Art a présenté de nouvelles expositions, publié de nouveaux livres et des éditions limitées en collaboration avec Alexander Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, Philippe Parreno, Rosemarie Trockel, Hiroshi Sugimoto,Thomas Schütte, Martin Kippenberger, Inge Mahn et Monika Sosnowska.

Founded in 1926 by Christian Zervos at 14 rue du Dragon, in the heart of Paris, “Cahiers d’Art” designates both a magazine, a publishing house and a gallery. The beginnings of Cahiers d’Art coincide with the advent of the Bauhaus, the discovery of Le Corbusier, Klee, Kandinsky, and with Zervos’ research on the primitive arts and archeology of the Cyclades. From the 1930s until the outbreak of the Second World War, the journal was mainly interested in the work of Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Léger, Ernst, Arp and Giacometti. In 1932 the first volume of the Catalog Picasso appeared; a project that will become the work of a lifetime, a collaboration between Zervos and Picasso materializing in 33 volumes that have since become the reference work on Picasso’s work. Artists’ collaborations with Cahiers d’Art have often resulted in original works.

Christian and Yvonne Zervos organized at the Galerie Cahiers d’Art between two to five exhibitions a year from 1932 to 1970, in particular those devoted to Calder, Gonzalez, Tanguy, Laurens, Brauner and Picasso.

Since its relaunch in 2012 by the Swedish Staffan Ahrenberg, Cahiers d’Art has reissued the 33 volumes of the Picasso catalog by Christian Zervos, in collaboration with the Picasso Administration, available in French and English for the first time in its history. In parallel, Cahiers d’Art presented new exhibitions, published new books and limited editions in collaboration with Alexander Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, Philippe Parreno, Rosemarie Trockel, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Thomas Schütte, Martin Kippenberger, Inge Mahn and Monika Sosnowska .
